New import settings for Photoshop files

Users can now select whether they want text in the hidden and locked layers of an Adobe Photoshop .psd file to be imported into Memsource for translation.

When the translation is complete and the Photoshop file is exported, the hidden and locked layers are restored.

New import settings for Markdown files

There are now more import options available for Markdown files (Memsource currently supports .md/.markdown extensions).

Memsource users can now:

  • Select to import files using either Plain or PHP/Python Extra Markdown flavors. (Previously, only Plain was supported.)
  • Select whether YAML header should be processed.
  • Select whether the text in code blocks should be included in the translatable text imported into Memsource.
  • Add custom elements which are converted into Memsource tags.
  • Define non-translatable blocks – sections in the Markdown file that should not be imported.

New Functionality for WordPress and Drupal Plugins

You asked, we listened! After speaking to some users of our WordPress and Drupal plugins, we’ve released some important updates to provide more options for users wanting to connect their CMS platform to Memsource Cloud for seamless translation.

WordPress Plugin – Support for Page Builders and Additional Localization

The Memsource Translation Plugin for WordPress works together with the Memsource WordPress Connector to automatically pull content from pages and posts for translation. The latest version (v 2.0) has been updated with a number of features, including:

  • Translation support for tags and categories
  • Support for popular page builders – Avada, Divi, and WPBakery (formerly Visual Composer)
  • Custom shortcode insertion – After building a custom shortcode in a third party plugin, easily add it to your WordPress site with our shortcode editor to translate your shortcode content

Drupal Plugin – Now on TMGMT

Memsource’s original Drupal plugin was for version 8. The additional plugin on Drupal’s marketplace allows users with Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 to connect to Memsource and easily translate all Drupal text elements supported by the TMGMT module.

Ad Hoc Translations on Choosing a Preferred Translation Platform

AdHoc Translations has been providing translation, interpreting, and linguistic services for companies in many different fields for nearly 30 years.

An agency with a modern technological focus, they chose Memsource as their preferred CAT tool for several reasons, including its user-friendliness and cloud-based platform. AdHoc Translations CEO Jesper Nielsen provided an overview of their translation management challenges and requirements, and the solutions they found with Memsource to increase efficiency.

Our Challenge – A Time-Consuming and Decentralized Translation Process

Before transitioning to Memsource as our preferred CAT tool, we worked with a range of other CAT tools. We had no server solution since the return on investing in server solutions for more than one tool would be too low. This meant that our internal processes became too time-consuming and resource-intensive for all parties involved.

It made our project managers’ work unnecessarily difficult because they had to spend too much time on manually importing and exporting translation memories (TMs) and files between the various systems, which also involved an increased risk of errors during the process.

Moreover, it was far from optimum that our external translators were unable to work in the same TM in real-time. This could affect the quality of the final product and therefore meant that the project manager had to spend extra time checking for consistent terminology etc.

For our external translators, it also often meant expensive investments in systems that were not always particularly intuitive. They would also not benefit from each other’s work when they shared a particular job with other translators.

Our Requirements – An Efficient, Agile Translation Solution

Overall, we were looking to optimize our internal processes and make managing them much more agile. During our search, we had the following requirements for a CAT solution:

  • A flexible Cloud solution that would make it possible to work in the same TM in real time and which solved the problem of having to send TMs back and forth.
  • An intuitive system that was easy to use for project managers and translators alike.
  • A solution that could easily be integrated with our other systems and tools.
  • A solution that allowed us to work in the same platform as our customers (shared projects).
  • A secure solution that would enable us to still offer our customers full confidentiality.
  • An efficient solution where we would always be sure to get quick and good support.
  • A solution that did not require the translators to make investments, which would make it easy and attractive for them to work for us.
  • A flexible solution adaptable to our needs and where we would be able to add new functionality over time.

Our Experience – Choosing Memsource as a Preferred Translation Tool

Memsource was able to meet all our requirements and needs, and the transition has been surprisingly easy and smooth.

Working in Memsource has made the work easier for our project managers – they have saved at least 10% of their time, allowing us to increase our turnaround time for clients. We have better terminology consistency among the translations by centralizing everything in Memsource. Additionally, we have only received positive feedback from our translators, who have found the CAT tool extremely easy to use.

Finally, we have profited by transitioning to Memsource as our preferred tool, partly because of the system itself, but also because of the team behind, who offers fantastic support and who is always ready to adapt to their customers’ needs.

Using Memsource at the Leipzig University: The Pros and Cons

Dr Edgar Bohm, a translation technology lecturer at the Institute of Applied Linguistics and Translatology of Leipzig University, used Memsource in his courses over the summer semester. We spoke with him and he gave us a little more insight into his experiences.

Dr Bohm was initially introduced to Memsource through a former student who started a translation agency and has been using Memsource as the foundation of his business. Later, Dr Bohm received a message from Memsource saying that there was a program tailored to universities that could be used to train his students:

I answered the e-mail and was surprised how fast I got a response. Licenses were no issue at all and they would be free of charge as long as we used them for seminar purposes only – which was exactly what I intended to do.”

Finding a Unique Solution

Dr Bohm’s plan for implementing the platform into his courses required the development of a specific solution in order to give the students the full experience. He wanted all participants of the courses to use the platform in a project manager role in order to display the full chain of tasks associated with the production of a translation.

After a little brainstorming, we were able to find a solution that allowed the implementation to occur, while still maintaining a reasonable level of user accounts. With this solution, Dr Bohm was able to set up the license for Leipzig University and proceed with organizing the course and use Memsource as an educational tool:

We created a project with a text and a translation memory we had prepared using a competitor’s tool in an earlier session. We did the analysis and prepared a cost estimate for our fictitious client. We then translated the text that I had prepared so that we could do some useful translation work on the one hand and use the imported translation memory on the other. Everything went very well; more than 20 course participants were very attentive and there were only a few questions. We managed to translate the text in time. We proceeded to quality assurance and then exported the text,” he explains.

Dr Bohm also asked his students to share their own findings about Memsource. This is the feedback he received:

Advantages

  • It is easy to operate
  • It is more user-friendly than all of the alternatives students have seen so far
  • All components of the project are visible on one screen
  • Machine translation does not cost extra
  • It is not required to install any program or program suite
  • Analysis is simple
  • Many different file types can be translated
  • No costly updates or upgrades
  • The tool can be used on any computer or mobile device with internet connection
  • Everything resides in the Cloud

Concerns

The students also shared some concerns they had regarding the Memsource platform, which are not to be swept under the rug. They address real fears associated with Cloud technology and these fears are fairly common amongst CAT users. These fears were:

  • Security of the Cloud
  • Pricing on monthly basis that could lead to significant spending in the long run

We understand the basis of these fears and we saw this as an opportunity to clear them up for Dr Bohm’s students. Here were our explanations:

The Pricing

The pricing is different from the model used most commonly by desktop-based tool providers. The issue with desktop tools is that you not only pay a considerable amount of money when purchasing them at the beginning, you also pay for the upgrades each year. The online support often costs extra as well.

With Memsource, the upfront costs are minimal and all the upgrades, updates and online support are free of charge. Furthermore, you can cancel or renew your subscription at any time so if you don’t work in Memsource for a month then you don’t have to pay for that month. On top of that, the 1+ Freelancers license, which costs 20 EUR a month, can be shared by a team of translators.

If you take all of this into consideration, Memsource is actually a cheaper option than the desktop-based solutions.

Security of the Cloud

With numerous concerns about the security of a Cloud-based solution, we felt we should clear things up. When a client uploads a project to the Cloud in Memsource, it stays in his or her hands through the entire process – the owner of the data only shares access to files stored in his private Cloud. You always know where your data is and you can be certain that others are not able to use it wrongfully.

With a desktop-based CAT tool, the data owner must send links or files, which the owner has no control over, and these links have to pass through e-mail clients that are often significantly less secure than the Cloud storage.

As an example, if the owner sends the project to a translator and the translator decides to share the data with his colleagues, the data owner has no way of finding out. On top of that, the files move from one device to another, thus greatly increasing the risk of the data being leaked or stolen. Your data is more secure in the Cloud.

Enhancing the Training Further

Going forward, Dr Bohm plans to continue to develop his courses using Memsource as a tool for his students:

We will try to follow the complete chain of tasks, starting with accepting a translation assignment (in the cloud) and finishing with a completed translated being sent together with the invoice to the client (from the cloud) and doing all the necessary steps in between.”

Memsource Production Moves to Bi-Weekly Release Cycles

The Memsource product and development teams have transitioned the product release cycle from weekly to twice per month, allowing for a more effective internal process and to spend more time on bug-checking and quality control before deploying to the live Memsource platform.

Why are we changing to bi-weekly release cycles?

In early 2016, Memsource started releasing updates with zero downtime, and by October, was releasing weekly updates to the platform. As the development team grew, they adopted the Scrum methodology for weekly feature development and bug fixing in early 2017. With the addition of a QA team in September 2017, the teams decided more time was needed between sprints. The weekly sprints have been extended to bi-weekly Tuesday release cycles effective December 2017 to provide time for additional testing and quality control.

What are the benefits?

The most immediate benefit should be invisible to users – a reduction of bugs and a smooth deployment of new features (however, because we’re a technology platform, if you DO find a bug, say hello to our friendly Support team so they can address it).

Will I have to download new versions of Memsource?

Nope. This is a major benefit of Cloud-based technology solutions, plus it will continue to be launched with zero downtime. The only item to download is the Memsource Desktop Editor for offline translations (but if you already have it, it will automatically update the next time you open it).

New CMS Connectors for Help Scout and HubSpot

Two new CMS connectors for Help Scout and HubSpot have been added to our growing list of technology integrationsThese connectors are available for users with the Ultimate and Unlimited editions of Memsource and can be set for manual or automated translations.

Help Scout Connector

Help Scout is a knowledge base and customer service technology platform. The Help Scout connector pulls articles from collections (folders) in the Help Scout Docs knowledge base directly into Memsource and then pushes the translated content back into the Help Scout system.

HubSpot Connector

HubSpot is a leading sales and marketing automation platform and CRM. The Hubspot connector works in a similar way to the Help Scout connector. It can take files, website pages, landing pages, and forms, pull them to Memsource for translation and then return the translations to the HubSpot system.

Memsource in 2017: A Record Year and New Teams

Just like each year before it, 2017 has been a record-setting year for Memsource.

In October, Memsource processed 2.6 billion words in a single month, setting an all-time record. Then, in November, we set a new record with 2.8 billion words.

This year, we released several new
CMS connectors and a mobile app, gave the platform a new design for a smoother user experience, and upgraded our APIs to REST standards. New analytics dashboards in projects and on the homepage provide more information to project managers and translation buyers, client portals provide easy access for internal and external customers to submit translation jobs, and everyone can better communicate with conversations in the editors. And that barely scratches the surface on our product updates.

But none of this happens on its own. In 2017, Memsource grew from 45 to 70 employees, increasing across all departments, especially in the development team. Eight more will join in January of 2018, and we’re still hiring. Starting in the new year, we will have employees from 13 countries across three continents who speak 21 different languages.

This growth has meant adding new office space in Prague as well as creating new teams to increase efficiency and internal collaboration and, ultimately, to better serve you – our customers and partners.

How Localization Can Drive Revenue in E-Commerce: A case study with Connox

In the rapidly changing world of e-commerce, companies are trying to connect with customers as much as possible to stand out and increase retention. Advances in data allow companies to track previous purchases, browsing habits, and even personal hobbies to try and provide the customer with the most personalized shopping experience as possible.

But what about language? In e-commerce, translation and localization processes are shifting from a cost center to an ROI strategy by replicating the same feeling the customer would receive in a local brick-and-mortar store. If a buyer feels like the online shopping experience is similar to their daily experiences in their home countries, they will be more comfortable and are more likely to make a purchase.

One company that placed this idea in the center of their business strategy was Connox.

 

The Problem: Ready to Personalize, No Translation System in Place

At Connox, a German e-commerce company specializing in home and furniture items, localization first was launched in 2010 when the company decided to internationalize outside of the German market into English. As they did so, personalization of the customer’s online shopping experience was of the utmost importance.

“Connox wants to offer the best possible shopping experience to customers all over the world,” said Josi Schlichting, Coordinator of International Shops. “We want customers to be greeted and serviced as if they were in a small local shop.”

Following the initial translation from German to English, the next step was to set up an e-shop for the Austrian audience in 2015. “We wanted to offer customers service in Austrian-German with payment methods they were used to, checkout processes and trust-certificates they know, as well as rating platforms, delivery times, and prices as if we were an Austrian shop. That’s our approach.”

 

 

Soon, Connox was translating from German into a total of four languages (French, English, and Danish) with localized subdomains (Austrian, Swiss-German, Swiss-French, and British English). Each language and subdomain have native translators, quality assurance, customer care, and marketing professionals alongside up to four translation agencies.

“At first, we had to learn how important localization really is,” Josi said, “and then we had to start setting up language teams and test tools, and then talk with translation agencies.”

To centralize processes for the multinational team and to make the localization workflow as efficient as possible, Josi and the Connox team chose Memsource.

 

The Solution: A Collaborative, API-Enabled Cloud Platform

After testing a number of CAT tools, Josi and the team chose Memsource for its open API functionality and toolsets that fit their needs. The platform was easy to implement, was user-friendly, and could easily import and export translation memory and term bases. The team can set job-specific settings, such as locking links, creating tags for sensitive formatting, and including links to websites and images. They were also able to collaborate with Memsource partner TextMinded (now part of Semantix) for additional onboarding and implementation assistance.


The Setup

Connox localizes a variety of website content including product descriptions, names and details of the variants, and image names and descriptions. By using APIs, the files for translation can be exported from the in-house Connox system directly into Memsource and securely sent to agencies and translators. For new translation projects, there is an initial discussion about the project setup regarding term bases and style guides, and once established, the workflow happens efficiently without any unnecessary effort.

After the files are pulled into Memsource, translators around the world can collaborate, project statuses are updated in real-time, and translation memory reuses previous translations for consistency and savings. Once the translations are completed, checked for quality, and approved, the files are pushed back into Connox’s system. A final QA process occurs, and then the completed translations are published to the respective localized domains.

 

The Results: An Efficient, Streamlined Localization Workflow

After integrating with Memsource, Josi and the Connox team are able to manage the localization workflow efficiently with in-house and external vendors around the world.


Faster, better, easier

By utilizing the API connection, translation memory and term bases, and quality checks, Josi and her team have received considerable time savings – a decrease in turnaround time between 30-40%. “Translations became better, coordination became easier and more transparent, and errors decreased because the tool is able to maintain consistency with the company’s style through the use of term bases,” Josi said.


A direct return on investment

The choice to localize into different languages and create a personalized experience for online shoppers has already started paying off for Connox. After an initial launch of revenue in their French and Danish e-shops (600% and over 1,000% respectively), Connox has seen an average of 20% increase in month-on-month revenue in both domains.


Multi-vendor management

The in-house team works with up to four different external vendors with varying delivery dates and amounts of content. Vendors are provided with between 200-2,000 files per batch and return them within 1-8 weeks, depending on the number and deadline. Everyone involved in the workflow operates within the Memsource platform, regardless of location, and the Connox team can ensure all of the vendors are using the same terminology and are reusing previous translations with translation memory.


Real-time oversight

When working with multiple vendors on the progress of several translation projects, having oversight in real-time is essential. “Memsource makes it easy to keep an eye on the progress of different projects with different teams and languages alive at the same time,” said Josi, “and it allows us to analyze them whenever someone needs some information or an update.”


Reduction of complexity

As an e-commerce company, the Connox team needs to be fast and flexible to adapt to their customer’s everyday needs all over the world. Memsource’s API-enabled platform helps the team to connect directly to their internal platform reducing the need to send files over email, to address “the huge complexity of languages and cultural demands within a very short period of time”, and to quickly collaborate with service providers around the world.

 

A New Way of Doing Business

For Connox, diving into localization required adjustments and establishing new processes. “A good example is our new plug type page,” Josi said. “It identifies different plugs for wall outlets in countries around the world. We wouldn’t have needed this webpage if we didn’t localize or had plans to internationalize at all.” They have also customized their customer review page – each subdomain has quotes and success stories tailored to the specific locale and language.

But it’s paying off. Revenue is up, translation workflows are streamlined, and security has increased with direct file transfers via API. There’s only one question remaining: which language is next?

Customizable Shortcuts now available in Memsource Desktop Editor

We are very pleased to announce the release of Customizable Shortcuts in Memsource Desktop Editor – a present from us for the holiday season!

You can now decide which keyboard shortcuts work best for you, making the translation of your jobs faster and more efficient.

You will find the new Customize Shortcuts option in the Tools menu of the Desktop Editor. You can customize all the default shortcuts for actions in the File, Edit, Tools and Format menus.

To change a shortcut, click on a default shortcut and type in the new shortcut. Then, click Save. (See the gif below for a demonstration.)

You can also search for actions or keyboard shortcuts.

The new Customizable Shortcuts feature is available in Memsource Desktop Editor 6.208.3. To update to the latest version, quit the Memsource Desktop Editor application and then reopen it – the update will have been automatically downloaded. Alternatively, you can download the latest version from our download page.

Overwrite Mode available in Memsource Editors

There is now an Overwrite Mode available in the Memsource Desktop Editor and Memsource Web Editor. Overwrite mode is when characters in front of the cursor position are deleted as new characters are added. Overwrite mode is currently unavailable for CJK languages.

How to enable Overwrite Mode in the Editors

You can do one of the following:

  • Press the Insert key
  • Select the Overwrite Mode icon from quick access buttons at the top of the application
  • Select Overwrite Mode from the Edit menu.

Mac

You can do one of the following:

  • Use the shortcut “Option + o”
  • Select the Overwrite Mode icon from the quick access buttons at the top of the application
  • Select Overwrite Mode from the Edit menu.

Increasing Security in Memsource with Single Sign-on

Having a centralized login system is a requirement for most companies, especially if you are managing hundreds or even thousands of users.

We are excited to announce that we have launched single sign-on (SSO) with OneLogin, allowing admins with the Ultimate and Unlimited editions to manage users in Memsource Cloud more easily and more securely than ever before.

What is single sign-on?

Single sign-on enables users to log in just once to a central identity provider (IdP) and from there access the apps (service providers) integrated with that IdP, without having to enter their credentials again. Our new SSO option means that employees in organizations using Memsource can log in to Memsource Cloud directly using OneLogin.  

What are the advantages of SSO?

    • Improved security: Employees are using more and more apps. Lots of different usernames and passwords for different apps can put a company network and company data at risk because it can be difficult to securely manage all the passwords. With SSO, it is much easier for companies to enforce a more rigorous password policy, and when used alongside other features like 2-factor authentication, can drastically improve account security. Read about the different ways Memsource Cloud enhances security (PDF).

 

    • Straightforward user management: Admins can manage access to company apps all in one place. Additionally, SSO allows admins to add and remove users from Memsource without needing to access the app itself.

 

  • Easier for users: Trying to remember multiple usernames and passwords is also a pain for employees (we’ve all selected the “reset password” link too many times…). With SSO, users just need to remember one set of credentials, meaning far fewer password reset requests which can compromise network and data security.

How can I configure SSO in Memsource?

It is easy for admin users to set up the Memsource SSO feature. It can be configured in the Settings section of your Memsource account and detailed instructions are available in our documentation.

Memsource can be integrated with identity providers compliant with SAML 2.0 protocol, but currently, our only fully supported option for SSO is with OneLogin. (More information about the OneLogin configuration is available in the OneLogin documentation).

The SSO feature is only available for Memsource users with Ultimate or Unlimited editions and can only be configured if you are logged in as an administrator.

Change Languages of Translation Memories and Termbases

Project Managers can now change the languages of translation memories (TMs) and termbases (TBs) that are empty and not attached to any projects.

Previously, if Project Managers wanted to edit the source and target languages of an empty TM or TB they would need to delete the incorrect TM or TB and create a new one which would have a new identification number. Now, even when the source or target language of a TM or TB is edited, the identification number remains the same.

 

Memsource Has Released the First Feature Powered by Artificial Intelligence

We are excited to announce the release of the first feature powered by artificial intelligence technology created by our new Memsource AI Team. The AI-powered Non-translatables feature can recognize content that does not need to be translated, reducing one’s translation spend. It currently supports over 200 language pairs and has been made available in the Enterprise and Ultimate editions on January 16, 2018. AI-powered Non-translatables will be made available in all paid editions in the following weeks.

Edit: As of February 27, 2018, the AI-powered Non-translatables feature is available on all paid editions.

Non-translatable segments contain characters, symbols, and words that do not need to be translated, such as numbers, formulas, code, email addresses, and currency. Memsource has supported non-translatables as a feature for a long time – the new AI-powered feature recognizes more non-translatables, including people and product names, and on top provides a score indicating whether a segment is recognized as a non-translatable (100%) or as a possible non-translatable (95-99%).

Testing indicates that among the top 100 language pairings in Memsource Cloud, 14% of segments and 4% of content are non-translatables. If the AI technology is enabled, these non-translatable segments and content can be confirmed and locked during the pre-translation process, saving time for project managers and translators, and costs for translation buyers.

“Recently, within the translation industry, we have noticed a lot of focus on post-editing, from training translators on how to efficiently post-edit to perfecting the post-editing feature set in translation technology products,” said David Čaněk, Memsource CEO and Head of Product. “Our AI technology is able to tell when a segment is a non-translatable with little or no need for post-editing. This means higher translation efficiency and cost reduction, and less repetitive work for translators.

“Going forward, our customers will benefit from less post-editing in Memsource,” said Čaněk, “which will save them time and reduce their costs.”

AI-Powered Non-Translatables in Memsource

Non-translatable matches can be identified within Memsource by the NT acronym and by 100% or 99% matches – a 100% match indicates a non-translatable segment with no need for post-editing, and a 99% match indicates a possible non-translatable has been identified but should be confirmed by a human translator.

Non-translatables can assist in reducing the number of segments and words to be translated but attached translation memory will always override the non-translatables feature.

The non-translatables feature can be activated in both the analysis and pre-translate sections of translation project settings, can be included in Net-rate Schemes for pricing templates, and is identifiable in the post-editing analysis.

Analysis – Running an analysis with non-translatables enabled will calculate the number of non-translatables in the document. By expanding the 100% and 99% sections, users can see the breakdown between which matches were found from translation memory (TM) and which were from non-translatables (NT).

Pre-translation – In the pre-translation settings, options to enable non-translatables, confirm NT segments, and lock NT segments can be found.

Translator Workbenches – In the Memsource Web and Memsource Desktop editors, non-translatable segments are identified as an underlined 100 or 99 in the CAT pane plus a text tooltip.

Net-rate Schemes – In Net-rate Schemes, rates can be customized for translators who edit and confirm non-translatable segments. The default options in Memsource are the same as those for segments with translation memory.

Post Editing AnalysisSimilar to the Analysis feature, a non-translatables (NT) column has been added to the post-editing analysis so users can see the segments, words, and characters that were processed by the NT feature in that particular job.

The Launch of an AI Team

The AI team was created in early 2017 after it was clear machine learning technology could bring added value to Memsource users. The AI team is comprised of seasoned software engineers with academic and enterprise track records in Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing (NLP), led by R&D Manager Dalibor Frívaldský, who joined the Memsource development team in 2011.

“I’ve been following the progress in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for some time,” said Frívaldský, “and it has become apparent that AI is not just a buzzword – it is a tangible, innovative, and breakthrough approach to solving a wide array of problems.

“The first positive results came quickly and I’m happy to say that AI is now an integral part of Memsource,” said Frívaldský. “We believe our customers will appreciate our efforts to bring innovative solutions to the translation market.”

The team is currently researching new applications of artificial intelligence to reduce repetitive translations, improve quality, and reduce turnaround time and costs.

“We have doubled the Memsource team in size to over 70 in the past year and have launched a number of new teams,” said Čaněk. “It’s great to see that the AI team has delivered a truly innovative feature in such a short time-span.

Amesto Translations Selects Memsource as Primary CAT-Tool

Amesto Translations is part of the Amesto Group and is one of the Nordic region’s largest translation agencies with offices in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Great Britain. The company provides services in over 200 languages and has been using Memsource to provide translations since 2014. In 2017, Amesto selected Memsource as its primary CAT-tool integrated with the XTRF project management platform to serve their global clients.

We spoke with Emma Skagerberg, IT Manager Production Systems, about how Amesto uses the Memsource-XTRF integration, why they chose Memsource as their preferred CAT-tool, and the benefits they have experienced.

 

Memsource: How long have you been using Memsource at Amesto?
Emma: We have been using Memsource since early 2014 and Memsource has been our primary CAT-tool since September 2017. Most of the projects we run in Memsource are created automatically via the XTRF-Memsource integration.

 

Describe your integration with XTRF, how do the two systems work together?
The translation workflow is set up in XTRF and, once the workflow has started, the integration will automatically create a project in Memsource based on the chosen workflow. It will also import the CAT-tool analysis and assign the providers selected in XTRF to all jobs in the workflow. There is no need to set up the project separately in both systems. At the same time, if you need to check a certain string or file as a Project Manager, you can open the project and the file in Memsource within seconds. Once the workflow is completed, the final version of the translated file will be placed in the output folder in XTRF, ready to be delivered to the customer.

 

 

Why did you decide to use Memsource as your primary CAT-tool?
We were looking for a cloud-based CAT-tool that could handle small projects quickly and still be flexible enough to handle a more complicated setup with several workflow steps and many linguists. It was also important to us to have file filters continuously updated as well as the possibility to customize automated processes. Finally, we wanted a tool which included a version that is free of charge for providers. We found all this in Memsource.

 

What has the experience been for your translators?
Most translators have reported that it is quick and easy to get started translating in Memsource. They also like the autocomplete feature and the preview feature (which we also have enabled for InDesign files via Frontlab), and they like that it is easy to share projects.

What are the most important features and functionality Amesto looks for in a preferred CAT-tool?
As previously mentioned, flexibility, continuous software updates, and a free version for providers are important. But we also value the options to easily choose between different MT engines, the ability to access APIs to help us automate repetitive tasks, the easy collaboration in large projects, and the management of workflows with many steps.

 

What has been the result of selecting Memsource as your preferred CAT-tool?
We have seen some productivity increases, partly due to an increased usage of machine translation (MT). We also don’t have to export and import translation packages anymore and there are fewer issues related to this task, such as corrupt packages or differences in tool versions.

 

What are the most important features that help you add value for your clients?
It is now easier for us to include our customers in terminology management and to have them perform client validation online. We can also allow them to search their own translation memories. When customers want to ensure that their data is secure and protected, we can block external linguists from downloading files to their local computer. And with less technical hassle and more MT usage, we can also shorten delivery times.

 

What would you suggest to other translation agencies who are looking for a preferred CAT-tool?
Our industry is changing fast, and as a translation agency, you will need technical platforms that are flexible and that will enable you to easily integrate different tools, like Frontlab and MT engines, and collaborate with technical partners throughout the translation process. I would suggest looking for a flexible system which will not lock you in and will allow you to scale in use to better serve your customers.

 

Is there anything else you would like to share regarding your experience with Memsource?
The Memsource team is very professional and helpful, they have good knowledge about their product, and overall, seem to be dedicated and committed to solving problems.

New Centralized Help Center Launched

We’re excited to announce the launch of our new user Help Center!

Starting on Tuesday, January 23, Memsource’s user documentation (formerly wiki.memsource.com) and community support center have been merged into one centralized platform powered by Zendesk.

 

New Help Center Highlights

  • Centralized Content – The user manuals have been restructured to include both documentation content and relevant help articles.
  • Community Center – A new community center provides space for posting questions and having discussions with other users and Memsource Support professionals. Anyone can view posts and articles, but users must have a Memsource Help Center account and be logged into the new Help Center to create or comment on a post. (Your Memsource Help Center account is different from your Memsource Cloud account.)
    Note: If you had an account in our previous Support Center, when you log in to our new Help Center for the first time you will need to create a new password.
  • Ticketing System – A new ticketing system is available for users who wish to contact the Memsource Support team. To access the system, users can click “Submit a request” to fill out a form for the Support team. The option to contact Support via email will continue to be an option, but the ticketing system allows users to be able to track the progress of requests and bug reports.
  • Improved Search – The improved searching functionality scans all related articles and community center posts to provide relevant information on topics.
  • Additional Content – New content has been added to help enhance user experience in the Help Center, including “Tips and Tricks” within the Memsource Cloud and Memsource Desktop and Web Editors documentation and an FAQ section has been added to the “Getting Started” category.

 

Additional content migrations from the wiki documentation site will be finalized over the coming weeks, but all new updates to content will be in the new platform, excluding the dynamic REST API documentation. All content from the legacy Support Center has been migrated.

Improved Visualization of Joined Jobs in Editors

It is now easier to work with combined translation jobs (files) in Memsource Desktop Editor and Web Editor. Each job will be separated by a bar which displays the job’s number and filename (as they appear in Memsource Cloud).

This is particularly useful in the following scenarios:

  • You have joined jobs together and want to visualize the jobs separately in the Editors. See the joining files article in our Help Center for more information.

 


  • You have split one job into multiple jobs and want to see them combined in the Editors but with the different jobs indicated. Learn more about splitting files in our Help Center.

 

This feature is immediately available in Memsource Web Editor. When you next launch Memsource Desktop Editor, the latest version of the application, which includes this new feature, will automatically download. If you are not asked to accept the update when you launch the application, you can download the latest version from our download page.

Change to Microsoft Translator Hub

Microsoft is changing their Collaborative Translation functions due to a European privacy law, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is taking effect from May 2018. The functions will be deprecated and will become read-only on February 1, 2018.

As a result, we have had to remove calls sending corrections (feedback) to Microsoft Translator Hub engines from our code. The option Send feedback is no longer available when creating a new Microsoft Translator Hub engine or editing an existing one. Read Microsoft’s official announcement about changes to the Collaborative Translation functions.
